‘Slow Down‘, the latest single from Kitchener Waterloo Ontario singer-songwriter Matthew Ryan Jacobs, cleverly arrives with the gentle warmth of a love song and gradually unfolds into something far more inward-looking and raw.
The opening is immediately disarming. Soft, tender vocals settle against an acoustic guitar, a raw electric countermelody weaving around them; folk at the foundations, with a layered rock instinct running beneath the surface.
Then the drums arrive. Not crashing in, not demanding attention, but stepping quietly into the room, almost tribal in their rhythm, muted and deliberate, as though they understand that their job here is to support rather than lead. It is a genuinely impressive piece of musical restraint, and it sets the tone for everything that follows.
But, it’s the lyric writing where ‘Slow Down’ really earns its keep. “It feels like dying while we’re lying awake” hits with the kind of bluntness that only works when the music around it is doing its job properly. “You can’t keep running” and “better keep the car running” sit in absolute tension with each other, the push and pull of someone caught between escape and acceptance, between knowing what needs to change and finding the courage to face it.
But this is not a song about someone else. This is a song about the conversation you have with yourself at three o’clock in the morning when the excuses have run out.
The mid-section builds with real purpose, vocals stronger and more urgent, harmonies layered, the electric guitar stepping forward to take the lead with an authority it has been quietly waiting to showcase. It is the kind of moment that would have a live crowd baying to get involved, and you suspect Matthew Ryan Jacobs knows exactly how to use it on stage.
Pulling back again, the track becomes quieter and more deliberate, letting the message reach you without interference. “No more running” closes the track. Not a question, not a plea, but a declaration; a promise made to the ‘self’. The conflict between self-realisation and acceptance woven into something that feels like solid ground.
Rooted in the blues and folk traditions that have shaped Matthew’s sound, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, the Delta somewhere in the distance, ‘Slow Down’ is the work of an artist who knows how to build a song with both talent and heart.
