Close your eyes. Feel your heartbeat. Now press play.

Lunar Shadows‘, a track from The White Whisper‘s album ‘Lunar Dances‘, enters the room from the very first second with a deep, resonant pulse, bass and drums moving together like a living thing; the kind of low-end frequency that travels through your speakers and straight into your chest.

Three minutes and fifty seconds of pure cosmic journey.

This is music built for losing yourself in, and that, The White Whisper has said, is entirely the point. Dance as a vehicle for every emotion, not just the bright and euphoric ones. The darker feelings, the melancholic ones, the ones that live in the dark corners of the room in the early hours, they belong on the dance floor too; and ‘Lunar Shadows’ knows that.

It is moody for the good, dreamscape-esque, and it wears that with pride.

The production carries unmistakable echoes of The Cure and Depeche Mode, that electro atmosphere, dark and cinematic, synths doing the work that vocals might usually do, creating a sound that is both instrumental and completely melodic at once. You can picture this in a beautifully shot sci-fi as easily as you can picture it drifting through the speakers of a chilled Ibiza club, when the night has softened into something more contemplative and the dance floor has become your sanctuary.

The build through the midsection is so slow and deliberate it almost slips past unnoticed. You don’t realise you’ve been drawn deeper until you’re already there, caught in what feels like the arms of something vast and outer-existential. And then the electric guitar arrives, unexpectedly but not out of place, its melodic riff carrying unmistakable echoes of Giorgio Moroder, hypnotic, resolute, conjuring images of a lone dancer moving through fire, elements of Mogwai drifting at the edges. And then, just as naturally as it built, the track slips back into its dance flow, and you find yourself wishing it wouldn’t end. Four more minutes of this would not have been unwelcome.

The closing section carries a trip-hop echo, a gentle, deliberate fade that brings you back to earth without quite letting go. Think Sneaker Pimps, Air, Boards of Canada, music that doesn’t ask to be listened to but asks to be felt somewhere deeper. It travels through your veins; heartbeats, electric synaptic sparks, and the quiet rush of something intrinsic.

‘Lunar Shadows’ gives witchcraft, and I mean that as the highest possible compliment. There is something commanding and conjuring about it, something that reaches into the room and pulls you gently but firmly under its spell. Feminine, cosmic and deeply hypnagogic; no mind-altering substances required, only open ears and the willingness to go somewhere other than here.

Lunar Shadows‘ is featured on the Echoes In Ink ‘Echoes In The Groove‘ playlist. Lie back, float, submit.
