A Funk-Fuelled Reminder to Live Life on Your Own Terms: Earth-o-Naut’s ‘Get On With Gettin’ On’

It used to be keeping up with the Joneses, but nowadays it seems to be more about keeping up withthe algorithms and media dictates, along with the pressure and expectation that they bring.

And that hasn’t gone unnoticed by Earth-o-Naut, who takes it to task in this latest single, ‘Get On With Gettin’ On’.

Alongside the exceptional musicianship, production and songwriting, we can always rely on Earth-o-Naut to bring a life lesson or two, whether we’re young, old or somewhere in between. Never preaching but l reminding us that we don’t have to follow the rules set by those who believe they have a right to dictate how we live or compete for the space inside our heads.

‘Get On With Gettin’ On’ stays with the funk and soul feel of Earth-o-Naut’s previous album release, ‘This Is Nowhere. This Is Everywhere.’, kicking in with an addictive melody right from the start. A rhythmic guitar groove, punctuated by bursts of brass, brings an upbeat feel to the track, while Earth-o-Naut’s wonderfully clear vocals deliver a message that grows with every listen.

There is some serious musical talent behind this track. Steve White (The Style Council, Paul Weller, The Family Silver, Trio Valore) returns on drums, Steve Trigg (Stone Foundation, Paul Weller, PP Arnold) guests on trumpet, and Winston Rollins (Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, Jamiroquai) on trombone. Thankfully there’s plenty of space to enjoy that arrangement without overshadowing Earth-o-Naut’s vocals.

The build towards the middle of the track is a delight, and I can already imagine how good this will sound with a full band when Earth-o-Naut tours next year (link at the end of this review), whilst the subsequent quieter interlude makes way for a drum sweep that will literally have you salivating.

With lyrics like “outside your door there’s a war being waged to get inside your head”, there’s no doubt this track is a call to take the initiative; a reminder that life is for living, and to live it how you want to, with honesty, integrity and passion. Yet for all its observations about the pressures of modern life, there’s nothing despondent about ‘Get On With Gettin’ On’; quite the opposite. There’s a sense of solidarity running through it, an encouragement to reclaim some space for ourselves and carry on regardless of what others might want us to think, say or do. “You’ll never shake me, always I believe” perhaps is a nod to Earth-o-Naut’s own values, too.

There’s little doubt ‘Get On With Gettin’ On’, released on Agogo Records, will prove to be another Earth-o-Naut earworm, perhaps it’ll even become something of a personal mantra, ready to pull out whenever we need reminding to get on living life and dancing our own steps on our own terms.

’Get On With Gettin’ On is available on all streaming platforms now, alongside a bonus remix of Earth-o-Naut’s debut single, ’Call Me’, from renowned German DJ and production duo Mo’ Horizons. Tickets for the first live show are available now, with further shows expected to be announced over the coming months.
