Review of 'Nothing Now' by George Bailey
George Bailey continues to sharpen his emotional edge with ‘Nothing Now’, the second single from his forthcoming debut EP, due for release in May 2026.
Landing on 14th February, there’s a knowing, tongue-in-cheek contrast at play; a song rooted in loss and longing, wrapped in melody bright enough to keep your feet jumping.
From the outset, Nothing Now feels buoyant and immediate. Cracking drums and chiming guitar lines set an upbeat tone, carrying a sweetness that’s familiar in George’s work, yet
noticeably more confident in its delivery. Beneath that lightness sits a recognisable ache, the giddiness love brings, followed by the disorientation of feeling it slip away.
Lyrically, the track balances openness with secrecy, honesty with internalised thought. There’s a sense of curiosity and quiet obsession, wondering where someone is, what they’re doing, and whether they’re thinking of you too. It’s reflective without wallowing, capturing that tortured middle ground where heartache and hope briefly coexist.
Musically, George allows the song space to breathe. Impactful tempo shifts add light and shade, breaking away from what could be thought of as predictable structures, signalling a growing confidence in his songwriting. Guitar and drums echo one another throughout, mirroring the relationship at the heart of the track; intertwined, inseparable, but ultimately fractured.
Lines like “you just wanted to fly away” linger, open to interpretation, while “let me die in your arms” taps into that familiar,
almost reckless desire to hold onto a feeling forever. It’s raw and emotionally punchy, indie rock with its heart on full display.
Despite its subject matter, Nothing Now feels destined for
pogoing crowds and shouted-back choruses, its defiant melody refusing to sink under the weight of loss. Sonically, it nods to the likes of The Vaccines and Two Door Cinema Club, with flashes of Corella and The Royston Club, but remains
unmistakably George Bailey.
A clear step forward in sound and production, Nothing Now
suggests an EP shaped by growth, risk and emotional honesty. Expect this one to bounce straight back from the crowd when George launches the EP live at ARC Stockton on 14th May.
