There’s an almost Spanish feel to the opening guitar, beautifully clear and uncluttered, creating the space for Koentakhinte’s clean, sensitive vocal to sit softly over the top. Think Charlie Puth in some of his more intimate moments, but with Koentakhinte very much telling his own story.

And this is a love song of sorts, although one concerned less with the discovery of love and more with what happens when that love is no longer there.

There’s a realisation woven through the lyrics of just how easily another person can become ‘part of everything’, absorbed into the normality of our lives without us even noticing it happening. It is only in their absence that the space they occupied suddenly becomes impossible to ignore for us as humans, not so for the world around us.

‘How can all things keep moving?’ Koentakhinte asks, followed by the even more vulnerable, ‘Who am I without you?’

They are incredibly delicate yet quietly powerful lyrics; how can the world simply carry on as though nothing has changed when someone’s absence changes everything?

It leaves ‘When You’re Not Here’ open to many interpretations. That absence could come through distance, separation, travel or grief. As time passes, we learn to continue without someone, only for the smallest everyday trigger to suddenly remind us of what, or who, is missing.

But there is perhaps something else hidden amongst that sadness too; how lucky are we to have had someone in our lives whose absence is capable of leaving such a space?

As the track builds, the delivery of the track changes. There’s greater passion and emotion, but it’s never pushed so far that it overwhelms the intimacy established at the beginning.

The instrumentation follows him there too, allowing the song to grow without losing the delicacy that makes it so affecting in the first place.

Ultimately, ‘When You’re Not Here’ asks questions much bigger than its gentle acoustic arrangement might initially suggest. What does it mean to love someone? What happens when we lose that love? And perhaps most poignantly, ‘Who am I when you’re not here?’
Koentakhinte doesn’t answer them for us, and that’s rather the point.

Instead, ‘When You’re Not Here’ leaves enough space for us to find our own person, memory or meaning somewhere within it, and I suspect that will be the reason many listeners press play again once it ends.
