Track Review: 'The Comedian and The Boxer' from successpit
Political statement within music isn’t new, and let’s face it, the material just keeps on coming, so it’s no surprise that there always seems to be plenty to talk about. But it doesn’t all have to be about rage against the Establishment.
Sometimes it’s acknowledgement of solidarity, resilience and being seen.
‘The Comedian and The Boxer’, the new track release from successpit (formerly known as Middle Management) is exactly that; rooted in the heart of political and literal warfare, it’s a story of those that won’t be drawn, forced, or removed. A chilled groove intro leads into circus surrealism mixed with Victorian steam-punk, with a catchy harlequin type melody accented with frenetic glitchy guitars, delivering an contradictory image of the frivolity of war and counsel that those in command can present versus those at the sharp end of the impact.
Slapstick imagery perfectly reflects lyrical tongue in cheek irony, nestled alongside other lines that truly pummel the emotions and keep the seriousness of the underlying transmission; ‘put these seeds into your pocket so that flowers grow where you die’, a reflection of the realities of war, displacement, and strife.
The track, now live on streaming platforms, fits perfectly into the long awaited EP, ‘You Are So Much More Than This’, due for release later this year. Brilliantly infectious, as expected from successpit, with post-punk pop earworms, satirical humour and intelligent observation of the world as it needs to really be seen.
